Trip to the Farmers Market

Beets!   Good.

Beets from the Farmers Market!   Sooooo good.

Aren't these gorgeous?   Everything about them screams earthy perfection.   Dirt covered and all.

Enough about the beets.   We made it to the NC Farmers Market this weekend for the first time in, well, forever.   I don't know why I avoid the Farmers Market in the colder months, seems easier to just order the CSA box.    But as soon as warmer weather arrives, this is definitely one of my favorite destinations.   So much to choose from, so much eye candy!

We filled our bags to the brim.    Spring onions, tomatoes, broccoli, strawberries, peas...

Check out these potatoes...

They made us giggle (Farmer's Market humor).

We wandered over to the flowers.   John and I apparently have different methods in choosing our spring plants.   I was all set to pick out bunches of beauties to plant in our yard and garden and display on our front porch.   John suggested we make a plan first.   Sigh.   (Although it means we will be back this weekend!)

Rounded the trip out with a visit to the pork farmer.   That's him... the actual farmer.    (We picked up a package of fresh bratwurst, which I proceeded to make, Wisconsin style, and they were fabulous.)

All in all, a great visit.   Looking forward to our return this weekend.

Do you have a local Farmer's Markets?    Any favorite must haves during your visits?

Our Home and Garden Tour in Charleston

The rest of our lovely spring afternoon in Charleston was just as wonderful as the first part.    We did not get tickets to the Home and Garden tour for this visit as we decided to do our own.   The flowers were out in full force, adding color and lightness at every corner.

I have fallen a little bit in love with this black and cream house with contrasting grey wall.   I love how the budding tree adds a little bit of an Asian feel to this historic property.    The subtle pops of yellow and green are so fresh against the stone background.

John and I were planning to avoid lunch as we had a big breakfast and were anticipating my birthday dinner at FIG later that night.    But, all that walking and the promise of she crab soup led us to 82 Queen for some time off our feet.    I had been here several years earlier with my mother and as we had done at the time, John and I sat in the gorgeous little spring garden in the back at our own little private table for two.   I love their sweet butterfly chairs and twinkling lights.   We could have sat here all afternoon and the she crab soup was every bit as wonderful as I remembered!

After our rest, we wandered around Charleston some more, heading back to our inn to get ready for dinner.     We were sidetracked every few minutes by a stop in one of the little shops.    Love this antique shop with the dogs in the window!    We made it back just in time as the skies grew increasingly darker as we walked.      As we stepped inside, the rain started pouring.

Is it spring yet where you are?   Are you enjoying the weather?    We're looking at temperatures heading into the 80s again later this week... can't wait!

Endless Flowers

My well intentioned Romance Week fizzled out as quickly as it started.    Sometimes life gets in the way.     After dealing with feeling terrible for a couple days with some random illness, I managed to pull it together to get some needed things accomplished before John and I headed to St. Louis for the long holiday weekend and our first official meeting of the families and wedding related celebration.

So while I didn’t quite get around to sharing the planned romance with all of you during this past week, I assure you we did a pretty nice job behind the scenes.   This weekend was perfect in so many ways and if anyone in my new family is out there reading, again our thanks to each of you for making it so special.   Our dinner on the lawn surrounded by candlelight, fireflies, great new friends and family and wonderful food and wine, is an evening we will never forget.  Truly magical.

One of my favorite things from this weekend was a gift from John’s parents.  A gorgeous flower vase.   Even better is the gentle reminder given to John that it is his new responsibility to make sure it stays filled each week as we enter our new married life together.   Isn’t that the loveliest gift?   I certainly think so!   I have to say, John is really pretty good about flowers.   He is always surprising me.   This just makes it an official duty.   Yay for new families and new traditions!

All this talk about flowers reminds me of one of my favorite spots in Europe.     On our very last day on board the ship, my new group of friends and I ventured out to Nice for the afternoon.    We had a  truly special time filled with lots of giddy laughter and fun.

I especially fell in love with the Flower Market in Nice.   Row after row of gorgeous flowers in all shades and textures.     I was thrilled to finally visit as it was a place I had always heard about but had never seen.     I love flower markets in general… I mean really… how could you not?   But this one in particular was really special.   Something about the light in Nice makes everything sparkle a little.   Very fresh.   Just gorgeous.

And a little tidbit for any of my male readers (you know who you are!), next time your wandering around a gorgeous flower market with a special someone, one of the most romantic gestures you can do is buy her some of her favorites on the spot.   Nothing says I love you more than spontaneous flower buying.      I’ll always remember the guy in Rome who was being pestered by one of the ever present rose sellers at his dinner table.   Most of these sellers get brushed away, but this particular guy bought the entire bunch of roses for his date.    How romantic is that?

Wishing everyone a romantic and flower filled day!    And a very special Happy Anniversary wish to John!   Three years ago today.    I feel like the luckiest girl alive and I am looking forward to a lifetime of flowers with you.

Paris, My New Old Love

If it is possible to fall in love more than once on a trip, I’ve done it.   Paris, my new, old, love.   I had forgotten how wonderful this city is.

All of my initial fears have gone.  I love my new little apartment on its slightly sketchy street.  I am in a wonderful location.   Central to everything.  I spent yesterday getting acclimated.

Gorgeous late spring day.   I needed this after all of the weather we have been experiencing lately.     Perfect for walking.   When I travel, I love to walk.  I try to avoid public transportation unless I am stuck somewhere or have a time constraint.    The metro here is wonderful, so I will use as needed, however, everything is so walkable and there is so much to see and explore down the little streets that I do not want to miss anything.

My long walk yesterday brought me first to Saint Martin, which is about one minute down my street.    Walked through all of the cafes, ethnic restaurants, boulangeries, jewelry shops and arrived at the Pompidou Center.    I did not go inside for this visit.   Will go at some point.   Just sat out in the piazza.  (What do they call these in French?)  People watched for awhile.   Someone told me the weather hasn’t been so great lately here either so everyone was just enjoying being outside.

From the Pomidou Center, I continued on until I reached the Seine.   A brief stop in an adorable park with a large ornate tower.   I can’t remember the name but it was recently restored.    Lots of people sitting outside eating lunch, relaxing, reading, soaking up the sun.     Sat for awhile and then walked across the bridge to the flower market.  Since it is nice listening to a description of it in a French accent, here is a link to a lovely little video depicting the market.

I left the market and wandered down over to Ile St. Louis.  I had no particular agenda, just wanted to walk up and down the little streets and stop in shops that were appealing to me.   Relatively quiet.   Fun browsing various little jewelry shops.   Found a couple of bracelets and practiced my (lack of) French with the shop owners.  Gorgeous architecture lining the outer streets along the Seine.   While photographing one of the buildings,  a man stopped to give me a history lesson on what I was shooting.  How wonderful!

Back over to Ile de la Cite to take a peak at Notre Dame.  I like approaching from the back.  Well, I’m not sure it is the back, but it is the spot with the gardens and tree lined paths with much fewer people.    Spotted a couple taking their wedding photographs.    They looked nervous and happy.    Around to the front.   Did not go inside.   Too crowded and today was just about wandering around and finding my way anyway.

Over the Seine again and on to Rue Rivoli, busy street with lots of bigger shopping, heading to the Louvre.    Walked through the square into the area with the pyramid and on through to the Tuileries Gardens.    One of my favorite spots in Paris.   I love it for not only the greenery, but for the people.    Relaxed, happy.   Couples, families, people like me by themselves.   Laying on the grass, napping, reading, having picnics.    Sitting by the fountains chatting.   Just spending time.  I love it.   Makes me happy.   Wandered around for awhile and then eventually back to Rivoli and the crowded streets to make my way back to my apartment.    By this time I had been walking for hours and getting tired.

I felt like a little kid in a candy shop today.   There is so much to see here and explore.    So many little places to pop into or sit and relax.   Cafes, parks.   Beautiful.   I am in love again.  I do not love Rome any less.   Two very different places and as I said yesterday, that is completely okay.    Love them both!

Today I am going to wander around La Marais in other direction, hopefully finally pick up that falafel for a picnic at Place de Vosges, then  head over the Seine to Saint Germain, pass the D’Orsay, eventually make my way to Eiffel Tower and then back my way via Champs Elysse.  I have no idea how long this will take, but it is the general plan and I need to get going and see what this day has in store for me.

Au Revoir!
